Corrupting Sony ARW Files
« on: April 06, 2019, 06:33:26 AM »
Hello and thank you for this great tool. I use it a lot for tagging my photos.
Now I bought a new Sony Camera and get some problems with the files modified by exiftool, when I use the Sony Software that came with the camera (https://imagingedge.sony.net/de-de/ie-desktop.html). Each file modified by exiftool by any way is reported as "corrupt" by this software.

e.g.

exiftool.exe "-DateTimeOriginal>DateTimeOriginal" c:\tmp\DSC02003.ARW

Gets me this:

Warning: [minor] Entries in SubIFD were out of sequence. Fixed. - c:/tmp/DSC02003.ARW
    1 image files updated

Happens on different Versions of exiftool (tested 10.96 on Windows 10 / 10.10 on Ubuntu Linux)

This is a diff of the exiftool output on the original (right) and the modified (left) file.

If you wish I can send a 18MB sample File. Let me know, if you want the original or the modified or both.

Can I prevent exiftool from "fixing" the file?

Tnx

Looks like the files from your camera are indeed written badly and that exiftool did fix that (hence the warning message). It is not unheard of that cameras write invalid files. Sometimes a firmware update exists to fix this. You could check.

Hi Nyegere,

See the first item in the list of known problems.  Hopefully Sony will fix their software sometime, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

...where DIR is the name of a directory/folder containing the images.  On Mac/Linux, use single quotes (') instead of double quotes (") around arguments containing a dollar sign ($).

Installed RawTherapee and indeed it can handle the files. So blame seems to be on Sony!

Thanks a lot.
